A Short List of BooksThis is a list over various books about Ancient Egypt. They can be considered basic and are not all that difficult to get through for the average reader. The Dictionary of Ancient Egypt - Ian Shaw, Paul Nicholson. A wonderful dictionary, covering 'everything'. You can find answers to most things Egyptian in it, and after each entry there are references to articles, essays, books etc. Much reccomended. Chronicles of the Pharaohs - Peter A. Clayton. A record of all the kings from the earliest dynasties throughout the Roman Period. Covers their political feats, the most important queens etc. If you are really interested - get this one! Women in Ancient Egypt - Gay Robins. This is a very good book which covers all aspects of women´s life in those days. Can be heartily reccomended, not only for the ladies ;-) Symbol & Magic in Egyptian Art - Richard H. Wilkinson. Will let you in on the symbolism of colors, numbers, form, buildings and much more in the world of the Ancients. A Dictionary of Egyptian Gods and Goddesses - George Hart. A very good and informative book about many, many of the Egyptian deities, even those who are pretty unusual. Much reccomended. The Great Goddesses of Egypt - Barbara S. Lesko. Takes a close look at the female deities Nut, Nit, Nekhbet, Wadjet, Het-Hert, Mut, Aset, as well as a chapter about temples, clergy and rituals. Reccommended. Daughters of Isis - Joyce Tyldesley Another very good book about women and their life in ancient Egypt. Daily Life of the Egyptian Gods - Dimitri Meeks and Christine Favard Meeks This one is maybe not a very easy read for the beginner, but not all that difficult either. It´s very worthwhile if you´re interested in the background and the 'life' in the society of the Egyptian deities. It talks about godes among themselves, gods as relating to humans, and describes in detail some of the most important rituals in ancient Egypt. Egyptian Myths - George Hart. A thin little book which gives a great overview and insight in the different creation myths at the various religious centers in Ancient Egypt. An Ancient Egyptian Herbal - Lise Manniche. A wonderful book for those who are curious about the ancient Egyptian use of herbs for purposes like medicine, cosmetics, food etc. Ancient Egyptian Literature - Miriam Lichtheim. These are three different volumes covering the Old & Middle Kingdom, the New Kingdom and the Late Period. You will find letters, inscriptions on steale, love poetry, hymns and wisdom instructions. |
