Akhet - Ankh - Atef

(more coming)

Akhet
The Horizon, a hieroglyphic sign depicting the sun rising between two mountain peaks, meaning both the setting and the rising of the sun. Sometimes it was depicted with two lions guarding the beginning and the end of the day, as such it had a deep significance with the concept of rebirth from the Underworld.

Ankh
Origin unclear and a large range of suggestions as to what it really is have been offered. It seems however to be clear that it symbolizes life and is seen carried by many gods, and held out to touch the mouth of the new king, bringing him, perhaps, air to breathe and thus life. The ankh was used in artifacts, ritual tools would be shaped in the likeness of an ankh sign, sistrums, spoons, mirrors and many other things for daily use reflect the sign of the ankh. Perhaps it was the most widely used symbol, and was frequently carried as a protective amulet. It often appeared together with the Djedcolumn and the Was sign also as decorative elements.

Atef

One of the royal crowns; the atef crown was commonly seen worn by Wesir (Osiris). This was a combination of the white crown (Hedjet) of Upper Egypt and the crown with double plumes of each side of it, the tip of it ending in a solar disc.
