Trip to Egypt, April 2005
The Westbank 5: Deir el Bahri
Mortuary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut (Djeser-Djeseru)

The mortuary temple of Queen Hatshepsut looks impressive already far off.

As you wander along the causeway, the great structure slowy grows....
...and grows...

A remaining little piece of the trees which lined the causeway in the days of Hatshepsut.

From the base of the lower ramp, looking out over the area where the temple of Mentuhotep once stood. A lion on each side was keeping watch, only one remains.

Closeup. It is thought that these two lions symbolized Aker the god who guarded the east and west horizon in the form of two lions.

The lower northern colonnade with the huge statue of Hatshepsut.
On next platform there are coloured reliefs which have kept amazingly well.
