Trip to Egypt, April 2005

The Giza Plateau

They are really too big. You stand there, dwarfed, you crane your neck to see the capstones and yet you cannot really believe what you are seeing.

The Giza Plateau is perhaps the most wellknown necropolis of all, with the pyramids of Khufu, Khefren and Menkaure, all from the 4th Dynasty along with the Sphinx. The earliest find sofar is the mastaba # V, belonging to King Djet from the 1st Dynasty. Diggings are still going on in the area.

The pyramid of King Khufu.

The pyramid of King Khafre. It must have been awseome when the whole structure was covered with white limestone.

The peculiar, modernistic building which houses the Solar Boat.

The graceful Solarboat which was found 1954, buried in pieces in a pit by the pyramid.
Now reconstructed and to be seen in this specially built museum.

Overview of the Sphinx and its surroundings.
To the left is seen the Valley Temple of Khafre and behind it the

Causeway leading to his Mortuary Temple.
